Brexit is an English language word (a portmanteau of 'Britain' and 'exit') used to describe the withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union. The word fist came into use in 2012, probably an adaptation of Grexit, a term used to describe the propsed withdrawal of Greece from the EU. Initally the term 'Brixit' was also used.
