- Black American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos stage a silent protest against racial discrimination on the medal podium at the Mexico Olympic Games. The two athletes, gold and bronze medallists in the 200m, stood with their heads bowed and a black-gloved hand raised as the US national anthem played during the victory ceremony.
