  • Space Shuttle Columbia, STS-1, is launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The maiden voyage occurs 20 years after Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth in his Vostock I spacecraft.
